A derivative of benzodiazepine, Valium is manufactured by Roche for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Valium (Diazepam) possesses anticonvulsant, skeletal muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, amnestic and sedative properties. Having these properties, Valium is useful for treating anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms and some types of epilepsy. Diazepam is also used to medical procedures such as endoscopy to minimize tension and anxiety.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed Diazepam as a core medicine in its Essential Drug List. It is the most prescribed benzodiazepine and is used to treat a wide range of medical conditions.
It was approved for use in 1963 and is five times more effective than the first benzodiazepine (chlordiazepoxide) developed and has exceeded the latter in sales.
Drowsiness, impaired coordination, impaired motor functions, impaired balance, fatigue, dizziness, depression, anterograde amnesia and reflex tachycardia are the common side effects of Valium. These symptoms, though, are present with most benzodiazepines. Unusual side effects include confusion, nervousness, nausea, diplopia, constipation, headache, hypotension, dysarthria, incontinence, jaundice, changes in sex drive and in salivation, slurring of speech, tremor, rash, urinary retention, irritability, vertigo, muscle cramps, insomnia. If any of these side effects develop, Valium must be withdrawn.
In prescribing Valium with other medications, pharmacological interactions must be given attention. Special concern must be taken with narcotics, antidepressants, barbiturates and phenotihiazines. Salty foods can slow down the absorption and elimination of diazepam thereby increasing drug activity and levels. However, foods that acidify urine can lead to a faster absorption and elimination of diazepam and therefore decrease drug activity and levels. The depressive effects of alcohol, narcotics, other sedatives/hypnotics and muscle relaxants are also maximized by Valium which can lead to increased risk of psychological dependence. The treatment must be discontinued if the patient manifests any signs of abuse or dependence development.
